How Do You Remove the Background of a Picture in Canva?

In this tutorial, we will learn how to remove the background of a picture in Canva. Whether you want to create a professional-looking design or simply remove the distracting background from a photo, Canva makes it easy to achieve the desired result.

Step 1: Login to Canva

If you haven't already, go to canva.com and log in to your account. If you don't have an account, you can quickly create one for free.

Step 2: Create a New Design

Once you're logged in, click on the "Create a design" button located at the top right corner of the screen. A dropdown menu will appear with various design options. Choose the appropriate option based on your intended use.

Note:

  • If you want to remove the background from an existing design or photo, select "Custom Dimensions" and enter the dimensions of your existing design/photo.
  • If you want to start from scratch and create a new design with a transparent background, select one of Canva's pre-made templates or choose "Custom Dimensions" and set your desired dimensions.

Step 3: Upload Your Picture

To upload the picture you want to edit, click on the "Uploads" tab on the left side panel. Then click on the green "Upload Media" button and select your picture from your computer's file explorer.

Note:

Canva supports various image formats such as JPG, PNG, and SVG.

Step 4: Add Picture to Your Design

Once your picture is uploaded successfully, drag and drop it onto your design canvas. You can resize and reposition the picture as needed.

Step 5: Remove the Background

Click on the picture to select it. You will see a toolbar appear at the top of the screen with various editing options. Click on the "Effects" tab.

Under the "Effects" tab, you will find an option called "Background Remover." Click on it, and Canva will automatically remove the background from your picture, leaving only the subject.

Step 6: Fine-tune the Result (Optional)

If you are not satisfied with the automatic background removal or want to make further adjustments, you can use Canva's manual editing tools.

Click on the "Effects" tab again and scroll down to find options like "Adjust," "Crop," and "Flip." Experiment with these tools to refine your image until you achieve your desired result.

Step 7: Save and Download Your Edited Picture

Once you are happy with the result, click on the "Download" button located at the top right corner of the screen. Choose your preferred file format (JPG or PNG) and click on "Download."

Note:

If you have a Canva Pro subscription, you can also save your edited picture directly to your Canva account or share it with others via a link.

Congratulations! You have successfully removed the background of a picture in Canva. With this newfound skill, you can now create stunning designs or highlight specific subjects in your photos without any distractions.
