How Do You Add a Vignette in Photoshop CC?

In this tutorial, we will be learning how to add a vignette effect to your photos using Photoshop CC. Vignetting is a popular technique that helps draw the viewer's attention to the center of the image by darkening the edges. It adds depth and drama to your photos and can be used in various creative ways.

Step 1: Open Your Image

First, launch Photoshop CC and open the image you want to apply the vignette effect to. You can do this by going to File > Open or by dragging and dropping the image into the Photoshop workspace.

Step 2: Create a New Layer

To add the vignette effect non-destructively, it's best to create a new layer. To do this, go to Layer > New > Layer. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N.

Step 3: Choose a Circular Selection Tool

Select a circular selection tool from the toolbar on the left-hand side. You can choose either Elliptical Marquee Tool, which allows you to create an elliptical selection, or Elliptical Shape Tool, which creates a perfect circle.

Step 4: Draw a Circular Selection

To create a vignette effect, draw a circular selection on your image. Position it in such a way that it covers most of the center area you want to keep unaffected by the vignetting.

Tips:

  • To refine your selection, hold down the Shift key while drawing to create a perfect circle.
  • Hold down the Space bar to move the selection if needed.

Step 5: Feather the Selection

To achieve a smooth transition between the vignette and the center of the image, we need to feather the selection. Go to Select > Modify > Feather. In the feather radius dialog box, enter a value between 50-200 pixels depending on your image size and resolution. Click OK.

Step 6: Apply a Layer Mask

To apply the vignette effect, we will use a layer mask. With your circular selection still active, click on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. This will mask out the selected area, creating a vignette effect.

Step 7: Adjust Opacity if Desired

If you find that your vignette effect is too strong or subtle, you can adjust its intensity by changing the opacity of the layer. Simply select the layer and use the opacity slider in the Layers panel to make adjustments as needed.

Tips:

  • A lower opacity will make your vignette more subtle.
  • A higher opacity will make your vignette more pronounced.

Congratulations!

You have successfully added a vignette effect to your photo using Photoshop CC. Experiment with different feathering values, opacities, and shapes to achieve various creative effects. Vignetting can greatly enhance your images and add an artistic touch. Have fun exploring this technique!

Note: Remember to save your work by going to File > Save or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S.

Happy editing!
