I believe what really made Canva popular was the fact that they gave users access to their platform on their free tier plan, so that anyone was able to use and get used to their software.

As far as copyrighting goes, Canva has made it clear that you own the rights to your design work. It doesn't matter if you're on the free or on the Pro tier plan. 

You can sell templates as long as you own the rights to all the design elements used in the file.

But if you're creating templates with stock pictures or other illustrations you might want to individually check if the creators gave you rights to sell your work using their content. 

That being said, most 3rd party stock image content that's on Canva is usually royalty free and they give you permission to use it however you wish, including using it in templates and selling them. 

But you should always check with the authors to save money and potential lawsuits.
