Can I remove background from video in Canva for free?

If you're creating a video for social media or for your website and you're wondering if it's possible to remove the background of a certain video you have imported inside Canva this short tutorial is going to teach you how. Unfortunately this only works for the paid canva version. If you're looking for a free version we have listed below some options for you.

1. First make sure you click on the imported video and your layer is selected.

Next think you're going to want to do is click on Edit Video on the top panel, left side.

Then you're going to click on Background Remover.
Note: This tool only works for the paid version of canva at the moment. This might change or not depending on when you're visiting this page.

Another way to remove background, this time for free is to use 3rd party services and then import your videos into canva manually. One free website you can use is unscreen.
Another free website is bgrem or you can try kapwing.

Just a note that all these free websites have either size limitations or watermarks so your best bet would be to purchase a premium subscription and just use the free canva one.

Can I remove background from video in Canva for free?

Well, you can't do it directly in canva, you'll have to use a 3rd party website. First you'll have to export the video and upload it to one of the websites I listed above, and then you'll have to reimport them back in canva. So the answer is yes and no at the same time.

Also, side note: these background remover tools work best only when the background is a green screen.
A green screen is a neon screen placed in the background of a shot. It's mostly used in Hollywood to crop videos and to add special effects after. It can be also used in commercial advertising or in any other type of videos.

Here's an example of ours of a short video that we've run trough unscreen and then back in canva. You can see that it's not exactly perfect, the bigger the resolution the better the remover will look like.

But even with the canva paid tool I doubt you'll get the perfect results you're looking for. When it comes to doing more complex video edits we recommend you go ahead and pay an actual video editor to do it. Video is more complex than image editing and the simple banner edits Canva is currently offering.

So our recommendation is you shouldn't really be using Canva for video editing in the first place but nevertheless we hope this short guide has helped you either use the free tools or give up removing video backgrounds in canva entirely - and save some time :)
